boudoir makeup artist Albuquerque, NM | Lavish BoudoirMeet Christy Johnson - owner and principal artist of C. Johnson Makeup

Christy is an amazingly talented makeup artist for boudoir photos with Lavish Boudoir in our Albuquerque studio. It's been a pleasure to work with her and I cannot rave enough about her talent and professionalism. Trust me, it's a rare find. Oh, and shes' freaking gorgeous. What a dream to photograph!

Tell me about your business! What makes yours unique, what inspires you, what keeps that passion in you alive?

We provide hair and makeup services for special events, primarily weddings, as well as for photography. Occasionally, we are asked to work commercially as well, meaning for magazine, television, or other publications. This means that we are usually working on  weddings during the weekends, and providing hair and makeup services for headshots, maternity photos, family photos, etc… during the week. The variety keeps us engaged and passionate; we absolutely love meeting new people in new places. My job is never dull!

Would you do it all again? What have you learned along the way?

I would absolutely do it again! I love what I do, and I love meeting new people. It’s so fun to talk about people about why they’re getting ready and what they’re getting ready for, especially weddings! It’s so fun to hear about the engagement and the fiance and the whole process of planning the wedding. We’re so honored to be a part of it and it’s just so fun for us to hear all about it. Along the way, I have learned so much about the ins and outs of running a business and providing the best possible service to all of my clients. Of course we always learn about new techniques and new product and we strive to keep learning  and getting more skilled all the time!

The biggest advantage is that I can relate to my clients! I understand what it’s like to want to look your best and I know that sometimes that can be a struggle. Because of  Because of my perspective I believe it gives me the opportunity to relate to my clients and really meet them where they’re at and make sure that they get the best possible service and the best possible outcome that they can.

How do you try to maintain a balance between building or maintaining your business and having a love life?

Honestly, it's really difficult. My business can be all-consuming sometimes, especially when we're talking about working with brides and weddings that are rapidly approaching. Between spring and fall we’re pretty much non-stop working on weddings every single weekend and when we're not actually at the wedding or physically with clients we're working on schedules and contract or taking phone calls. I can't tell you the number of times that I've had to cancel important plans or reschedule my love life in order to accommodate my clients. I'm just thankful that I have a very understanding boyfriend.

Are you able to carve time for yourself to keep from burning out?

At a certain point you just have to schedule yourself with days off and really stick to that schedule. It can be very difficult especially when someone tries to make an appointment last minute. I really want to be able to accommodate everybody all the time however, to keep my relationship going strong and to keep myself from burning out I really have to set a serious goal to take time off and stick to it.

If you had twenty-four hours and a teleportation machine to yourself (no family, boyfriend or work), what would you do? Where would you go?

I would absolutely go sit on the beach in Bali. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit and it just looks completely peaceful and relaxing!

You are a business woman who happens to be in a creative field. What do you do to balance the desire to express yourself artistically, while maintaining a thriving business?

I like to participate in styled shoots with other creatives. This allows me to express my creativity while creating some amazing, gorgeous images! But when it comes to the client I really listen to them and do what I’m asked. My goal is to provide them with all that they are hoping for.

If you had $100,000 to spend on your business (no vacations, no new houses, etc), what would you do with it?

I would train an army of hair and makeup stylist to take over the world! Hahaha

What part of your business is most rewarding?

I really love working with women who struggle with their confidence and helping them to see just exactly how beautiful they truly are. There’s nothing more rewarding to me than to see somebody’s eyes light up the first time they look at themselves in the mirror after I’ve done their hair and makeup.

You work with a lot of engaged couples and brides, what have you learned about relationships this way?

I always say there’s a shoe for every foot. And I truly believe that after meeting all of our amazing couples! Sometimes, I get to see two people who I couldn't imagine just being more perfect for each other.boudoir makeup artist Albuquerque, NM | Lavish Boudoir

I know you’ve got a special someone in your life these days. How does being in a relatively new relationship affect your business?

I would definitely say that the business affect the relationship more than being in a relationship affects the business. Keith has really great about understanding my chaotic schedule and waiting patiently at dinner when I have to take a call from a client. I try really hard not to inconvenience him or make him feel unappreciated, but a lot of times my clients do come first especially when we're on a close deadline for their wedding.

We are all dying to know your best advice for busy moms and entrepreneurs. What are some tips to making yourself look amazing in a short amount of time?

I always recommend that on a day-to-day basis women do what feels most comfortable and makes them feel most confident. For me that means wearing my hair down. If I don’t have time to fully do my makeup I will put in the extra 5 to 10 minutes to make my hair look great. Or vice versa, whatever it is that makes you feel really wonderful, focus on that and don’t sweat the rest of it.

What are your top 3 makeup products right now?

That’s an impossible question. It’s like asking me to choose between my babies! Haha
